Example Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at CrossRiver Wilderness Centre by 5:00 p.m. After preliminary introductions, a hot evening meal will be served in the main lodge. After dinner, we will formally gather with the rest of the group for a brief expedition outline and orientation before settling in to a relaxing night at the Wilderness Centre.

Day 2: After an early breakfast, we pack and finish our final preparations before heading out to the trailhead (approximately a 45 minute drive). Here we will have an on-location safety talk, and begin the hike with a slow pace, up through the forest to a high subalpine meadow with towering peaks on both sides of us. We camp for our first night in this meadow. The trail is not that frequently travelled, and some pathfinding may be involved. The unique encounter with plants, wildflowers, and wildlife viewing opportunities along the way, however, can all be possible inspiration for nature-based activities or make for some great stories later on. Walking distance: 11-12 km; elevation gain: 800 m.

Day 3: Bright and early we pack, rise for coffee, or hot drink, and breakfast, then set out on our ascent to the expedition’s final destination—a high alpine plateau with lakes, glacier fingers, and views of some of the highest mountain ranges in the Canadian Rockies. We stay here for the night, near one of the alpine lakes. Some exploring and pathfinding may also be necessary today as well. Walking distance: 7-8 km; elevation gain: 600 m.

Day 4This morning we’ll spend some time resting and walking without our packs, exploring around the lakes and plateau, or working our way up even higher, depending on group circumstances. Wildlife viewing opportunities, including bighorn sheep; mountain goats; wolverines; and eagles are all possibilities. After lunch, we will begin our descent back towards the trailhead, camping this third night in the same pass we camped in on Day 2. Walking distance: 12-13 km; elevation gain: 100 m.

Day 5: After another breakfast, we may have time to do some more exploring around this very different eco-system of subalpine meadows and ridges, which present different nature and wildlife viewing opportunities. This may also be a good time for a nature-based activity to cap off the expedition. We’ll take lunch somewhere on the trail and be back at CrossRiver for a delicious, home-cooked, dinner. The evening is yours to relax at the Wilderness Centre, whether alone with a book, around the campfire, or in the outdoor wood-fired hot tub.

Day 6: After one final breakfast together, we part ways until next time.
